How it is calculated

Fibonacci levels divide a price move by fixed ratios. For a move up from the low L to the high H, a retracement level at ratio r is H − (H − L) × r, and an extension at ratio e is L + (H − L) × e.

For a move down, the same ratios are measured the other way: retracements from the low upwards and extensions from the high downwards.

Worked example (synthetic numbers)

A made-up move up from a low of 1.0800 to a high of 1.1000.

Retracement 23.6% = H − (H − L) × 0.236 = 1.1000 − (1.1000 − 1.0800) × 0.236 = 1.09528
Retracement 38.2% = H − (H − L) × 0.382 = 1.1000 − (1.1000 − 1.0800) × 0.382 = 1.09236
Retracement 50% = H − (H − L) × 0.5 = 1.1000 − (1.1000 − 1.0800) × 0.5 = 1.0900
Retracement 61.8% = H − (H − L) × 0.618 = 1.1000 − (1.1000 − 1.0800) × 0.618 = 1.08764
Retracement 78.6% = H − (H − L) × 0.786 = 1.1000 − (1.1000 − 1.0800) × 0.786 = 1.08428
Extension 127.2% = L + (H − L) × 1.272 = 1.0800 + (1.1000 − 1.0800) × 1.272 = 1.10544
Extension 161.8% = L + (H − L) × 1.618 = 1.0800 + (1.1000 − 1.0800) × 1.618 = 1.11236
Extension 261.8% = L + (H − L) × 2.618 = 1.0800 + (1.1000 − 1.0800) × 2.618 = 1.13236

The 50 % retracement is 1.0900, halfway back down the move, and the 161.8 % extension is 1.1124, beyond the high. The levels are arithmetic on the two prices entered; whether a price reacts near them is not something the calculator can tell.
