How it is calculated

The notional value of a position is lots × contract size × price, in the pair's quote currency. The margin is the position's size in the base currency divided by your leverage, converted into the account currency when the account is not in the base currency.

Brokers can set their own leverage and margin rules for each symbol and account type, so the figure your broker shows prevails.

Worked example (synthetic numbers)

A USD account opening 1.00 lot of USD/JPY at a leverage of 1:30, with a made-up price of 150.00 yen per dollar.

Notional = lots × contract size × price = 1 × 100,000 × 150.00 = 15,000,000.00 JPY
Margin = lots × contract size ÷ leverage = 1 × 100,000 ÷ 30 = 3,333.3333 USD

The broker would hold about 3,333.33 USD for this position. Because the account currency is the base currency, the price only affects the notional value, not the margin.
