How it is calculated

A pip is the price change set by the pip size: 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for yen pairs, and a size the broker defines for gold. The value of one pip is lots × pip size × contract size, in the pair's quote currency.

When your account is in another currency, the amount is converted with the pair's price (if the account currency is the base currency) or with a rate you enter.

Worked example (synthetic numbers)

A USD account with 0.20 lots of XAU/USD, using the default gold contract size of 100 troy ounces and pip size of 0.1.

Pip value = lots × pip size × contract size = 0.20 × 0.1 × 100 = 2.00 USD

Each 0.1 move in the gold price changes the result of this position by 2.00 USD. Brokers define the gold pip differently, so check the contract specification and edit the pip size if yours uses 0.01.
